METUCHEN POLICE DEPARTMENT
History
The Metuchen Police Department was organized on March 1, 1900. It was comprised of only one officer at that time. The department reached peak strength between 1973 and1976 when it had thirty-five officers. The department currently has three divisions: the administrative division, the investigative division, and the patrol division. Today the Metuchen Police Department has 28 officers, 4 civilian dispatchers, two secretaries, and one part-time psychologist who provides assistance to the youth of our community.
The department has changed considerably since its inception in 1900 by way of computer technology, weapons, and other changes that have evolved over the years in the police profession. Metuchen is a unique community with a crime rate that is low enough so the police department can provide excellent service to its residence. The motto, “ Protect and Serve” is a motto that the Metuchen Police Department exemplifies.
