ADVISORY

Over the past several weeks, the Metuchen Police have investigated several pedestrian and/or bicyclists struck by motor vehicles.  In two of these crashes the motor vehicle fled following the crash and we have yet to determine the offender.

In the fall of 2008, the Metuchen Police participated in a campaign for pedestrian safety as the result of a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.  During the campaign officers issued 240 summonses for drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in a cross walk.   The Metuchen Police are planning another campaign in early spring of 2009 regardless of grant funds.

We would however like to remind motorists to be vigilant to pedestrians and bicyclists on the roadway of our community.  We also have several lighted crosswalks installed on the roadways in our community which motorists should be aware of.  Though pedestrians have the right of way, pedestrians too should be vigilant when crossing the road.  Pedestrians should cross in crosswalks or at corners and refrain from jaywalking when crossing the roadways.
