Dear Metuchen Municipal Pool Community,
We hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe. After a difficult couple of months, it goes without saying that we could all use the Metuchen Municipal Pool (MMP) now more than ever. Unfortunately however, for a variety of reasons, we regret to inform you that the Borough Pool Commission made the difficult decision at its meeting tonight to cancel the 2020 summer pool season, which includes our MMP Swim & Dive Team. We have made this decision to: 1) protect our residents, pool patrons, staff, and summer program participants from the spread and infection of COVID-19; 2) minimize the known and unknown health, safety, and facility risks of operating our pool and summer programs in the current climate; and 3) provide for the short and long term financial stability of our self-sustaining pool utility.
The COVID-19 pandemic previously forced us to announce that we would not be able to open any earlier than June 20 despite our usual Memorial Day weekend opening. Our hope was that we might be able to find a way, once we received guidance from State officials on local pool safety procedures, to train our staff and welcome our members to the pool using whatever social distancing techniques were recommended. However, to date we have not received such guidance, and over the last week or two it became increasingly apparent that the longer we were unable to open the MMP, the less economically feasible it would have been to open at all.
We know that for some of our families, the MMP is a cherished tradition that goes back over 50 years. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has changed our world and we need to respond accordingly to protect the health of our Metuchen community. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back for a fantastic 2021 summer season.
Chairman, Metuchen Pool Commission
