The Development Commission has four missions: First, to promote planned and orderly development for Metuchen that maintains or expands the tax base, but still ensures a compatibility with the existing character and heritage of the Borough. Second, to encourage aesthetic improvements through the establishment of design and maintenance standards and other activities. Third, to cooperate with all other agencies within and without the Borough of Metuchen, both public and private, in the encouragement of any and all existing commercial facilities already established in the Borough. Fourth, to create a climate in the Borough that will attract other enterprises and stimulate further development throughout the community.
Commission activities have included: 1) considering proposed ordinances that have the effect of attracting businesses compatible with the Borough's character; 2) surveying business in town to determine how best to retain and expand the existing commercial tax base; 3) placing benches and decorative banners in the downtown area; and 4) promoting facade improvements through low-cost programs. The Commission is currently in the process of updating the Metuchen Brochure*, an informational guide designed to help our existing business and also attract new business to the Borough.
The Commission is composed of 10 members appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Council and meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 8:00pm in Borough Hall. Council member Dorothy Rasmussen is the council liaison to the Commission. All meetings are open to the public.
